Lockdown Member Of The Month – August 2020

Our August Member of the Month is going to Jenna Paton – who is going from strength to strength in the gym at the moment and is an absolute pleasure to have around.

Jen’s relationship with CrossFit started many years ago – as a friend of Gage through swimming when they were growing up, Gage spent years trying to get Jen to join CrossFit and although she attended the odd session here and there, she never stuck to it, much to Gage’s frustration – as she knew just how good she could be!! Finally, she joined M Squared, and actually got into a routine with it – and got the bug! And now look at her! Absolutely flying through skills, she’s just learned kipping pull ups and can do about 8 in a row already, her lifts are getting stronger and stronger, and she moves well.  Not only that, she pushes herself every time she comes in, has a hunger to learn more, is coachable, has a smile on her face when she’s here, and speaks to everyone, bringing a cheerful vibe to the gym. We’re proud of her and looking forward to seeing her future within CrossFit!

M – How long have you been doing CrossFit?

JP – This question is not for someone with a memory like me! To keep it simple (and probably inaccurate) I inconsistently frequented M Squared from March 2019 for a couple of months, had 7 months off and came back in November 2019 and now I am here to stay!

So the short answer would have been: 10 months or so!

M – What class time do you usually attend and why does that work for you?

JP – I haven’t ever had a set routine in life and especially with Corona what even is normal right now! I’d say I join the Breakfast Club if I need to get the workout in before work, but also I am a regular attendee of the 4.30/5.45 classes. I mix it up!

M – What is your why? Why do you put yourself through it each day? Do you have goals you want to achieve?

JP – WHY is a good question when I am midway through a tasty WOD! But strangely (or not so strangely as we all come back for more!) I guess the simple answer is- I enjoy it!  And I know we shouldn’t workout to eat, but, if I didn’t work out, my God, I dread to think! So I guess, I do partly work out because I absolutely love the food.

Another why is because the classes give some added structure to my day, they tie me in a little (which I need) and for example, during the summer holidays, the 9.30am sets me up right for the day.

M – What advice would you give anyone wanting to start CrossFit but is either unsure or nervous? We get people all the time saying they need to get fit first or they could never do what we do? Any advice for those people?

JP – I feel I bang on about this to everyone and anyone! My advice is simple- just start!* You don’t need to worry that you’re ‘not fit enough yet…’ or that you will ‘join when you’re fitter…’ – the best place to get fit is here! You will very soon see the benefits, physiologically and psychologically and wish you had started sooner. M Squared is an incredibly warm (not just the newly insulated roof!) and welcoming place, and you will immediately feel a sense of belonging. The coaching is second-to-none and so you are in very safe hands- the coaches will guide and support you.

*Don’t partner with Big Al as she will kill you off 🙂

M – What is your biggest achievement so far in Crossfit and what are you most proud of?

JP – I am proud that I am actually, for once in my life, sticking to something!
I have just about managed to get a few pull-ups together and surprised myself with a pistol squat (or 10) the other week!

I am proud to be a rising Crossfit W*nker and have entered my first competition in January!

Thank you to all at M Squared x

M – You are welcome! And good to know you’re always banging on about it to everyone and anyone haha! Thank you for joining and sticking to it – you are a great addition to the M Squared Team and we love having you around, can’t wait to see more of your progression – keep smashing it. 🙂
