Member Of The Month – July 2025
Our July MOTM award goes to the amazing Flora Porter!
Flora is a wonderful human, she is super smiley, often found giggling or chatting away to anyone and everyone! She has been regularly coming to CrossFit classes for a few years now and made lots of improvements along the way. Recently however she has been extra-smashing it! Lots of PBs, and skills unlocked, including kipping chest to bar pull ups, kipping TTB and the elusive strict pull up!!! She moves wonderfully, her lifting technique is mega and she is always a pleasure to have in class. She is sometimes a little chaotic, we have to keep an extra eye on her to make sure she doesn’t trip over random objects like the huge barbell in front of her, and she has been known to forget what items to bring to the gym, resulting in her bringing drinking water in an empty passata jar instead of a bottle. But these are some of the reasons we love her! Have a read on to find out more about her CrossFit journey so far…

M – How long have you been doing CrossFit?
FP – 4.5 years! I started on my eldests child’s first birthday October 2020. I had always planned to start CrossFit through mum and baby classes but lockdown put a stop to that so I had to brave the proper classes from the get go! Then lockdown happened again so I didn’t really start properly until April 2021.

M– What class time do you usually attend and why does that work for you?
FP – A real mix! Mostly evening classes as I find it easier to come straight after work.Although recently now I’m (finally) getting more unbroken sleep I’ve braved some 7.15am which I’ve also enjoyed.
M– What is your why? Why do you put yourself through it each day? Do you have goals you want to achieve?
FP – I think my why has changed a lot since I started. I would have said to get fit, now the fitness is a bonus it’s mostly because I love it but also because it’s an hour for myself where I cannot think about anything else apart from all the technical bits of movements and how tired I am. I call it distracted mindfulness. Having achieved my pull up goal I need to set a new goal for myself- I’d love to get a 70kg clean- hopefully this one doesn’t take 8 years!

M– What advice would you give anyone wanting to start CrossFit but is either unsure or nervous? We get people all the time saying they need to get fit first or they could never do what we do? Any advice for those people?
FP – Do it! Putting my big girl pants on and stepping through the doors was definitely one of my best decisions. What I love about CrossFit is because everything is scaleable people of all different fitness and strength can do the same workout and end up equally as tired so even when you’re new you don’t feel terribly unfit because everyone is lying on the floor with you!

M What is your biggest achievement so far in CrossFit and what are you most proud of?
FP – I guess I’m pretty proud of finally doing a strict pull up. I think mostly I’m proud of showing up week on week through all life’s changes, injuries and challenges especially when it felt really hard.

M – Exactly! That’s what it’s about – not how fast you go or how much you can lift, but showing up despite life, despite being tired, and despite it being tough! You’re amazing and very much deserve MOTM!
